TASTEE BREAD FACTORY FIRE - Sept 26, 2013
Not since the great Studebaker Piquette Market fire of 2005 have Detroiters been treated to such a riveting and ravenous factory building fire as they were on the afternoon of September 26th, 2013. Once a former bakery of bread, cupcakes and other confections for the Tastee Bread Company, the huge abandoned factory succumbed to a massive fire. It was being used by at least two companies, one for storage and the other for tractor trailer repair. Most likely an arson fire - possibly set by scrappers - the block-long factory fire took hours to extinguish and was still smoldering two days later (when the photos below were taken). Scrappers are notorious for razing a building in order to get the metal which is exposed and easier to access once the building is ravaged by fire. News photos courtesy of WDIV Ch4 - NBC Detroit.
