Dearborn Brick Factories
Long associated with automobile manufacturing, Dearborn used to be home to nearly half a dozen brick factories due in large part to the vast amount of natural clay that lies just a few feet under the ground. Clippert, Dort, Haggerty, Mercier, and Wagner are just some of the more recognized names in the industry. Henry Ford built his Ford & Son (Fordson) Tractor Factory in the former Wagner Brick Factory, some of which still remains today. One of two large ponds which used to be clay pits still exists in front of the Ford Engineering Building on Oakwood Boulevard.
